Mist eliminator at the air intake

An air intake is not a weather louvre: different tasks and different tests

Air intake with a mist eliminator against spray/mist, and an outdoor weather louvre — not equivalent

Schematic diagram, not an installation drawing.

At the air intake, a mist eliminator protects the system from spray and droplet mist coming from outside (for example, from neighboring cooling towers). A weather louvre is a different product with different geometry and tests (the scope of EN 13030): their roles are not equivalent and do not replace each other automatically.

Selection inputs

  • the intake flow rate and section;
  • sources of spray/mist nearby (distance, wind);
  • precipitation protection requirements separately — they apply to the louvre;
  • corrosion resistance of the materials — outdoor installation.

Design options

Vane or mesh pads in an outdoor execution; the material follows the corrosive medium. The designer decides how they relate to rain protection; weather louvre tests are not automatically credited to the mist eliminator.
